Kirtipur, Lalitpur on Thursday, 10 April 2018 — Life with digital impression or life in isolation is not immune from thirst of new development with new media; the new media with native behavior understanding human actions has gained attention of people, especially youth who have developed their own way to express their emotions like reading habit, expressing their happiness and sadness in digital media. An intensity of the media is significant in youth and attention of any entity or sector for youth is always high. Traditional library is in line to transform in new way to meet youth’s path.

Digital library, which is a call of present scenario, is conceptually based on Digital Asset Management (DAM) which is systematic collection of digital objects. Likely books as an object of classic library, digital object is important element of DAM. The object might be digital documents, photos, audios, videos, data and any custom formats.

Ownership is very component during digital publishing to build trust to reader towards content of resources. That’s why copyrights and controlling mechanism gain additional attention in DAM. Ownership creates trust which is very important while working with knowledge base products. Trust and Truth are two components of knowledge base products. Governing mechanism maintains trust over content and broadcast truth to audiences and readers.

Terminology

Since long time digital society has traveled with different names for digital object management. Popularly known as Content Management System (CMS) is initial template in beginning of systematic management of digital objects and its extended version for large scale is Enterprise Content Management (ECM). Today, Digital Asset Management (DAM) is well known as digital objects management concept to store, manage and share in mass. Digital objects like audiovisual objects are significant in DAM. That’s why sometimes, it is called – Media Asset Management (MAM) which focuses on photo, audio and video media to process

Asset

Notion of essentiality of digital object for target group is kind of mission of any digital asset management. Target group and core mission of initiation always drive magnitude of essence of DAM and quality of digital objects. The quality should be in high resolution. It is not only case of photo but also any digital object like video, audio or documents so that reader would feel comfortable.

Creating own process of reading habit and actions, many DAM systems employs their own procedure and technology to let reader read. These special procedures require sometimes encoding and decoding process with their own protocol which control their content in their own way. The way of control mechanism is mostly used in commercial DAM system which requires big coverage.

Significant geographic coverage and extensive digital impression need systematic development phase of knowledge base products – digital objects with metadata. Metadata is core text data which expands and describes an object in detailed and introduces to other search engines to expose in public. Metadata is extensively used even to relate other digital objects within DAM. Metadata with control structure always help search engine to index digital object with full text search in digital processing and query. That’s why metadata always gain noteworthy attention while working in digital asset management system. Metadata rules and regulation of Dublin core is very popular.

Type of System

DAM is also popular in every sector nowadays like business houses. DAM used in business houses for their marketing and sales are known as Brand Asset Management System which always focuses on promotional activities and business process for profit making. Library Asset Management System which is being used nowadays in traditional library to transform into modern library – digital library. Obtaining chain of command, work division and approval process are requirement of digital object processing, especially in production line where production asset management system uses workflow and project management to accomplish business process.

Knowledge Management Framework

Acquisition, development and sharing are three major folds of Knowledge Management (KM) in which DAM is essential component to render activities of KM which always promote knowledge of institution and preserve an institutional memory. Knowledge management always depends upon technology influences which is fulfilled by DAM. Hence, DAM is major component of KM.

Please check following blog article for knowledge management in detail.

Openness and open data

Knowledge management with openness always enhance quality of sharing and enrich sharing platform with connection with external partners and platforms. In addition, open data always gears up content with clear picture of incident and actions.

Data or any content in case freely available to anyone to use is open data or we could say openness of content which liberate anyone to release their own version with their input without any restriction from copyrights and patents. Openness is essential to address movement of freedom in data and content. Many governments and the United Nations have already initiated open government like United States of America (data.gov), data.gov.uk, data.gov.in and data.un.org.

Openness and interoperability

An openness always comes with transmitter and recipient which requires protocol to understand behavior of transmitter to decode exactly in a way to understand the message according to essence of transmitter. The protocol is known as mediating technologies – XML, JSON, SOAP – which are used in between communication channel for interoperability. Before implementing openness, the initiation should be stable and should be established well. That’s why implementation of DAM is essential process.

Implementation in your organization

Following elements are very important while implanting DAM in any organization. Please kindly look forward and consider following elements.

  • Mission – i.e. preservation of Institutional memory
  • Target Audience
  • Identification of Content
  • Resources – budget, technology & human resources
  • Sustainability
  • Deployment and promotion
  • Continuous R&D
